Migraine Headache

Many people suffer from tension headaches or migraines. The cause of most headaches is unknown, but there are indications that, among other things, there is increased tension in certain muscles.

How Botox works against migraines

Botox is a substance that has been shown to have a positive effect in recent years in all kinds of conditions where there is increased muscle tension. The mechanism of action is still the subject of various studies, but experience shows that about 70% of migraine (and other headache) patients benefit from the use of Botox. In these patients there is a clear relief of the complaints.

In general, a treatment of the frown muscle is sufficient to achieve a clear improvement of the complaints. Sometimes, based on pain, the back of the head can also be treated. In practice, it comes down to the fact that the patient keeps a diary in order to “score” what the effect of the Botox is on the headache symptoms in his specific situation. By means of a number of injections in a certain area, the relevant muscles are made less strong. The injections are not experienced as painful by most patients.

Temporary effect

The effect of the treatment is always temporary (2-6 months). Possible side effects of treatment with Botox are related to the injection itself (possibly a small bruise) and the effect of the treatment; sometimes there is some muscle weakness in the injected muscles. This effect is also always temporary.
