Botox is a substance that has been shown to have a positive effect in recent years in all kinds of conditions where there is increased muscle tension. The mechanism of action is still the subject of various studies, but experience shows that about 70% of migraine (and other headache) patients benefit from the use of Botox. In these patients there is a clear relief of the complaints.
In general, a treatment of the frown muscle is sufficient to achieve a clear improvement of the complaints. Sometimes, based on pain, the back of the head can also be treated. In practice, it comes down to the fact that the patient keeps a diary in order to “score” what the effect of the Botox is on the headache symptoms in his specific situation. By means of a number of injections in a certain area, the relevant muscles are made less strong. The injections are not experienced as painful by most patients.
The effect of the treatment is always temporary (2-6 months). Possible side effects of treatment with Botox are related to the injection itself (possibly a small bruise) and the effect of the treatment; sometimes there is some muscle weakness in the injected muscles. This effect is also always temporary.

Schedule a free consultation to discuss your symptoms, expectations, and desired outcomes. The doctor will assess which areas are best suited for Botox injections to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks. Risks and possible side effects will also be discussed.
If both parties agree, the treatment will take place immediately after the consultation. Before starting, the doctor will identify the areas where your headaches are most intense. The skin is disinfected and the injection points are carefully marked.
It’s important that Botox is injected precisely into the muscles where the migraines originate. The product will then help relax these overactive areas.
The total procedure takes approximately 15 minutes.
The optimal result is achieved after about 2 weeks. Botox helps calm the muscles, which reduces both the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks. If you’re not satisfied after 2 weeks, you’re welcome to return for a follow-up consultation with the doctor.
The effects of Botox last about 3 to 6 months. With consistent treatments, the results often last longer. Botox is not a permanent solution, but many experience significant relief from migraines.
UV exposure may increase skin sensitivity, cause pigmentation, and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Use a high SPF sunscreen to protect the skin.
Yes, provided it is administered in the correct areas. If injected incorrectly, Botox can potentially worsen headaches. Dosage and placement are critical your doctor will tailor the treatment to your symptoms.
Botox is less effective for migraines described as “exploding” or hormone-related headaches. Sharp pain in the cheeks or around the eyes (between the nose and eyes) also tends to respond poorly to Botox
Migraine is a neurological condition affecting about 3 million people in the Netherlands. It is more than just a headache and is often accompanied by symptoms like nausea, vomiting, visual disturbances (such as flashes of light), and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine attacks can significantly disrupt daily life.
