Buccal fat removal

The buccal fat layer is a round fat mass in the middle of the cheek. It is located between the facial muscles, in the hollow area under the cheekbones. The size of the buccal fat pads influences the shape of the face. Everyone has buccal fat. However, the size of the fat pads can vary greatly. If you have large fat pads, you may feel that your face is too round or too full. If you want to make your cheeks smaller, the doctor can remove your buccal fat. The result of the operation is to make a round face less wide.

Under local anaesthetic, the doctor makes small incisions on the inside of the cheeks. The round fat lobe in your cheek is removed. This may feel a bit tight, but it won’t hurt. The incisions are sutured with dissolvable sutures after the fat has been removed. The procedure can be compared to a dental treatment. After the procedure, we prescribe antibiotics and advise you to rinse your mouth regularly with water. Because the incision is made on the inside of the cheek, there is no visible scar.

Removal of buccal fat can only be performed by a specialist. There are many nerves at the site of the buccal fat and that entails risks. If the procedure is performed by a specialist, the risks are nil. The procedure takes about 45-60 minutes. The surgery has an immediate effect. Your face looks slimmer and more defined.

The consultation always takes place with the doctor who will perform your treatment. During this meeting, you can express what bothers you most and what you wish to change. The doctor will determine whether the desired result is achievable or if another treatment might be more suitable. Your medical history will also be reviewed, and the doctor will explain the procedure, expected results, recovery time, risks, complications, and costs.

Photos will be taken for your medical file. These are used for internal purposes only and will never be shared without your consent.

If both parties agree, you can immediately schedule the procedure. After scheduling, you will receive a confirmation email including a medical questionnaire. It is important to fill this out carefully, so the doctor can adequately prepare.
During your meeting with the doctor, the procedure will be discussed in detail. Some medications may need to be discontinued or adjusted according to the doctor’s instructions.

Please follow the doctor’s recommendations:
- Stop smoking one week before the procedure.
- Do not take anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin in tablet, gel, or cream form.
- Avoid heavy or fatty meals before the surgery; eat lightly the day before.
- Bring only what your doctor specifically recommends.
- Apply cold compresses to the cheeks during the first 48 hours to reduce swelling.
- Antibiotics are required post-procedure and will be prescribed by your doctor. You must complete a 5–7 day course.
- Stick to a liquid-only diet for the first few days. Gradually reintroduce soft foods as healing progresses. After about one week, dietary restrictions typically ease.
- Rinse your mouth after every meal and drink, using cold water followed by antiseptic mouthwash to prevent infection.
- You may return to physical activity about 2 weeks after the procedure.
- Expect some swelling (edema) for 3 to 5 days. Gum sensitivity and mouth sores may take up to 2 weeks to heal.
- If visible bruising or swelling bothers you, consider taking 7 days off from work or social activity. Otherwise, you can resume normal activities after 2–3 days.
- Avoid warm, stuffy environments during recovery.
- Sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling.
- Brush your teeth gently, including over the incision sites, using a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take enough rest after the procedure to allow your body to recover properly after the procedure. Our advice is therefore not to go back to work immediately. You can resume your work at your own pace after a week. So, depending on the type of work, you can go back to work after about a week. You may not perform any physically demanding work for the first four weeks. Do you have physically heavier work? In that case, keep in mind that it will take four to six weeks before you can start working.
